# Ideal customer profile for an accounting firm

Accounting firms are often told to "niche down", and the ICP is where that becomes concrete. Firms rarely lack clients; what they lack is clients they can serve profitably with what they already know. The best groups are industries where your team already knows the reports clients get asked for (the bank's work-in-progress schedule, a practice's profit by location), where a trigger forces the client to upgrade from a bookkeeper, and where the owner decides alone. The disqualifiers are just as useful: companies too small to pay your monthly fee, or too big to need you. Below is a worked example for Quillfield Accounting, a fictional firm. Each line points to the page of its invented site it came from.

## Sample: Quillfield Accounting (quillfield.example)

Outsourced bookkeeping and CFO services for small businesses. Quillfield Accounting is a fictional accounting firm. Its site is invented so the generator has something to read.

### Group 1: Construction subcontractors, 10 to 60 staff (Best fit: an industry page and 2 case studies)

- **Who they are:** US trade subcontractors (electrical, framing, concrete) with 10 to 60 staff, keeping their books in QuickBooks. [/industries/construction]
- **Who decides:** The owner, often with a family member or office manager doing the books. [/customers/hale-electric]
- **Their pain:** Job costs found out after the job ends, and work-in-progress reports the bank keeps asking for. [/industries/construction]
- **What sets them off:** A bonding or bank-loan request, a first year over $2M in sales, or the bookkeeper leaving. [/services/fractional-cfo]
- **Who to skip:** General contractors over 100 staff with an in-house controller, and one-person handyman businesses. [/pricing]
- **Where they are:** Local builders' associations and the surety agents who refer them. [/about] (inferred)

### Group 2: Dental and veterinary practices, 1 to 4 locations (Strong fit: an industry page)

- **Who they are:** Owner-run dental and veterinary practices with 1 to 4 locations and 8 to 40 staff. [/industries/practices]
- **Who decides:** The practice owner. The practice manager often brings it to them. [/industries/practices] (inferred)
- **Their pain:** Month-end that never closes, and no view of profit for each location. [/industries/practices]
- **What sets them off:** Buying a second practice, or bringing in a partner. [/industries/practices]
- **Who to skip:** Practices owned by a larger group with central finance. [/industries/practices] (inferred)
- **Where they are:** Practice-owner study clubs and the brokers who sell practices. [/about] (inferred)

### Group 3: Online shops on Shopify, $1M to $10M in sales (Test group: 1 blog post)

- **Who they are:** Shopify brands with $1M to $10M in yearly sales and stock held in a warehouse. [/blog/inventory-accounting]
- **Who decides:** The founder, or a head of operations. [/blog/inventory-accounting] (inferred)
- **Their pain:** Stock and cost of goods that don't match the bank. [/blog/inventory-accounting]
- **What sets them off:** Raising money, or a first stock count that goes wrong. [/blog/inventory-accounting] (inferred)
- **Who to skip:** Dropshippers who hold no stock. [/blog/inventory-accounting] (inferred)
- **Where they are:** Shopify founder communities. [/blog/inventory-accounting] (inferred)

**Positioning check:** Your homepage leads with "bookkeeping for small businesses", but your two detailed industry pages are construction and practices. Lead with those two. Online shops appear in one blog post only.

## Questions

### What's the difference between an ideal client profile and a niche?

A niche is the industry. The ideal client profile adds the size, decider, trigger and disqualifiers inside it, so you know which construction firms to talk to and which to refer elsewhere.

### How many client groups should an accounting firm target?

One or two you can name in a headline, plus a test group. More than that and your site stops speaking to anyone.

### Where do I find firms that match my ICP?

Usually through the people who already serve them: associations, brokers, surety agents, software partners. The "where they are" line is the list to start from.
